There are many reasons why women choose to have their breasts enlarged, including asymmetry, sagging or loss of volume due to ageing, weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or a lack of overall proportion.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size and enhance the shape and firmness of the breasts.

There are several ways to perform breast augmentation surgery and a number of options for incision sites and implant placement. The implants themselves vary in their contents, outer surface, shape and size.

Every woman is different, so every breast operation is unique. Our highly trained plastic surgeon, Dr Garry Buckland, has a special interest and expertise in breast surgery and has performed countless procedures in hospitals across Sydney.

Dr Buckland believes it’s essential for women considering breast surgery to be fully informed, which is why a personal consultation with Dr Buckland is the best way to decide which method, and which implants are right for your individual circumstances, body shape and desired outcome.

No decision to have surgery should be taken lightly, and Dr Buckland will be more than happy to answer the many questions you probably have, and to help you decide whether breast augmentation is right for you.

Some common questions include:

What’s involved?

Breast Augmentation surgery is done under general anaesthetic in hospital as either day surgery or an overnight stay. The operation itself is customised to your body shape and the look you are trying to achieve but usually the incisions are made either in the crease under the breast, around the areola (nipple) or under the arm. The breast implants are placed either underneath the pectoral (chest) muscle or beneath the breast – which method is chosen will depend on your body shape and the shape and position of your natural breast.

What type of implants are used?

Dr Buckland prefers to use cohesive silicone gel implants with a textured surface. These can be either teardrop shaped or round – which shape is best for you depends on your natural breast shape and the look you are trying to achieve. It is of the utmost importance that all these variables are customised to your unique breast and body shape as well as the look you want – this is why your consultation with Dr Buckland is so important.

Are silicon breast implants safe?

Silicon breast implants are freely available in Australia, and extensive clinical trials have been performed on tens of thousands of women to investigate their safety. The results clearly demonstrate that there is NO association between silicon breast implants and increased risk of breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or mixed connective tissue disease.

What about after the operation? Can I shower? When can I go back to work?

All the wounds are closed with internal dissolving sutures in order to get the best possible scar. Waterproof dressings are placed over the top which means you can shower normally. All our patients are provided with post-operative support bras.

It is usually possible to return to most jobs 1 week after your operation but it‘s important to limit lifting or upper body exercise for a month after the operation.
